A tough disciplinarian - loving, caring and selfless

Poonmatti Baichan
January 24, 1933 - April 22, 2010

Poonmatti Baichan (formerly of 70 Village, Corentyne, Guyana and currently of Mississauga, ON) passed away on April 22, 2010 at the age of 77. She was born on January 24th, 1933, at Albion Estate, Berbice, Guyana, to Naziban & Mohabir Ramcharan. Poonmatti Mohabir was their 3rd of 11 children: Tribainie, Dorothy, Mandy, Tekrani, Kamal, Arvindo, Surindo, Devin, Swatan and Shanta. Poonmatti attended Albion Canadian Missionary School. Although, she grew up in humble conditions, by her own account these were still some of the happiest times of her life.
On April 17th, 1949 Poonmatti was wedded to Jairam Baichan. The young couple moved around quite a bit due to the nature of Jairam’s job. At times they lived in Beterverwagting Village, Vreed-en-hoop, and New Amsterdam, but 70 Village was always considered to be their home base.
Along the way, they began their family and had four sons: Heymant, Mahen, Prakash and Mukesh. Poonmatti was a beautiful, religious and traditional woman; she was always well dressed, strong willed, and never spoke ill of anyone.
In the years she spent rearing her children, she became a very good cook - her sweet rice (kheer) and bara were well sought after. She was the first lady in her village who knew how to bake and she taught this skill to her neighbours as well. Her home was her pride and joy; it was well organized and clean.
Although, a tough disciplinarian, Poonmatti was very loving, caring and selfless. She opened up her home to many and was also mother for several of her nieces and nephews.
In the early years of her marriage she took on all domestic responsibilities so that her young husband could continue his studies. It paid dividends as Jairam became a Co-operative Officer with the Guyana government where he worked until his retirement. This afforded them many more opportunities, such as travelling abroad and the chance to immigrate to Canada in 1979.
Although their circumstances improved, Poonmatti did not forget where she came from and always willingly helped and offered support where it was needed.
With the passage of time, she gained four daughters-in-law: Gaitri, Joan, Joanie and Lorna. In the eyes of her eight grandchildren - Vijai, Nadia, Ravi, Sharda, Dave, Vic, Priya, and Anniesa - Poonmatti was an inspiration, a mountain of inner strength, courage and devotion.
Poonmatti will be missed by all especially by her beloved husband, her siblings, sons, daughters-in law and grandchildren. The pray that Lord Krishna will keep her in His presence and grant her soul eternal peace.
The Baichan Family expresses appreciation and thanks to all their relatives and friends for the help and support during this difficult time.
